Uisneach Bealtaine Fire Celebration 2020 @ The Hill of Uisneach

🔥 If the Tribes can’t come to Uisneach… then Uisneach shall go out to the Tribes ! 🔥

The lighting of the Bealtaine Fire on the Hill of Uisneach is one of Ireland’s oldest traditions. In ancient times, a great assembly would gather on the Hill to witness the fire being lit by the High King of Ireland. The Bealtaine Fire is traditionally seen as marking the arrival of Summer in Ireland and a symbol of the re-birth & rejuvenation of the land after the long Winter months. Once the fire was lit on the Hill of Uisneach, fires would be ignited on sacred hills all across Ireland. In recent years this tradition has been revived to become one of the key events in the Irish cultural calendar. The Bealtaine Celebration on the Hill of Uisneach is a genuine gathering of the tribes; people of all creeds, from all over the world coming together with the local community to create a truly unique event. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Bealtaine celebration has had to be cancelled. However, it was felt that the lighting of the sacred fire, should still go ahead – to symbolise hope and healing in brighter days ahead, in what is still a very trying time for us all. Therefore, the Bealtaine Fire was lit, as per tradition, at sunset (21:21pm) on May 5th. In accordance to the COVID-19 guidelines, **the only people in attendance was the Keeper of the Hill; David Clarke and his immediate family. The lighting of the Fire was live-streamed so our friends from all over the world can still join us – albeit virtually. From the Hill of Uisneach to every home and hearth in the land, may the Bealtaine Fire be the spark of a new coming together – of all our tribes.

The 2020 Fire Festival Celebration was supported by Westmeath County Council.

In light of the advice being given to the public from Government Departments regarding gatherings of over 500 people it is with great disappointment and a heavy heart that we bring the news of our Bealtaine Celebration 2020 not going ahead with the public involved.  The Hill of Uisneach, as a responsible heritage site, understandably must keep it’s visitors and guests safe and we feel this is, in light of all the is occurring, the best decision to make.

You will receive a full refund from Eventbrite over the coming days, to the card that was used when purchasing your ticket(s).  We apologise for any upset this may cause but we have to think of our friends of Uisneach, our staff and their well-being.

We wish you and yours well and that you are safe during this period.

Stay in touch with us via our social media platforms, we are down but we will rise again 🔥
