Lughnasadh on the Hill of Uisneach

Lughnasadh is just around the corner and is associated with Lugh. Lughnasadh, meaning the ‘Assembly of Lugh’ signifies the beginning of the harvest season and gives its name to the Irish word for August (Lúnasa in modern Irish).

Lugh is one of the most important figures in Irish Mythology and he’s depicted as a skilled and an adept craftsman, a true warrior, a king and a savior. He is said to have met his mortal end here on the Hill of Uisneach, by drowning in the lake which bears his name, Lough Lugh. His final resting place is traditionally said to be here on the Hill, at Carn Lugdach.

On Sunday we will celebrate the harvest season, sitting down at Lough Lugh and weaving through Lugh’s life with story telling delivered by two of Uisneach’s very own compelling bards, accompanied by music from local uilleann pipers. If the weather permits (no rain) we will be treated to our resident fire dancer in the evening as the sun sets on Lughnasadh.
